Demond "Dom" Mullins is a sociologist, combat veteran, and member of Full Circle Everest, the first black mountaineering team to summit Mt. Everest (2022). As Dom's manager and public relations’ representative, Brenda is working with him to promote his new book, The Sad Machine, which describes the journey through his youth in Brooklyn and the US Army, to the sport of mountaineering and the summit of Everest.
On May 12, 2022, Full Circle Everest became the first all-black team to summit Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. The Sad Machine is a nonfictional work describing my experiences as a member of the summiting team. By combining three threads of narration (comparative historical essays, memoirs, and field notes of the expedition) I explore the process by which adventurous men avoid intimacy, while taking the reader on a journey to the summit of Mt Everest.
Divorce and a motorcycle accident form the backdrop of my training and preparation to climb Mt Everest. Haunted by past traumas and mistakes, I undertake the responsibility of being a part of the historic Full Circle Expedition. Old and new love stories dovetail, as I experience severe heartbreak. Clarity is gained about past relationships. Finally, I make an essential epiphany too late.
